EDTA Chelate Calcium Disodium Dihydrate, C10H14N2Na2O8 · 2H2O, is a chelating agent used to sequester metal ions in aqueous solution.
Solvitar® (formerly known as Dissolvine E-Ca-10) is Nouryon’s high-purity, food-grade chelate that can be used to stabilize different types of foods and beverages. Trace metal ions in food can cause several spoilage reactions that will degrade the quality and the shelf life of the food products.
Chelating agents are important in the field of soap, detergents, textile dyeing, water softening, metal finishing and plating, pulp and paper, enzyme deactivation, photo chemistry, and bacteriocides. Solvitar® has been proven to be more effective than other types of chelating agents in stabilizing food and beverages.
Solvitar is added to some food as a preservative or stabilizer to prevent catalytic oxidative decoloration, which is catalyzed by metal ions. In soft drinks containing ascorbic acid and sodium benzoate, EDTA mitigates formation of benzene, a carcinogen. In personal care products, it is added to cosmetics to improve their stability toward air.
Nouryon’s Solvitar® is produced at its Chelates plant in Herkenbosch, The Netherlands. It is produced under HAACP and it has receieved the Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000). The FSSC 22000 is based on the internationally recognized standard ISO 22000 and the British Standards Institute (BSI) specification PAS 220.
